Resume Example With No Work Experience

What goes on the page when the experience section would otherwise be empty.

By Vitor AguiarPublished 13 September 2026

The problem with a first resume is not that you have done nothing. It is that the things you have done do not arrive pre-sorted into the shape a resume expects, so the page looks empty while your life does not.

The fix is an inventory before it is a document. Write down everything that took sustained effort and produced something another person saw: coursework with a deliverable, a society you ran, a weekend job in an unrelated field, a thing you built, a charity you gave Saturdays to. Then rank it by how much evidence it carries, and the page assembles itself.

Why it is written this way

Education is at the top, and it will not stay there

Right now your degree is the most substantial thing you have, so it goes first. Within two years of full-time work that stops being true and it moves to the bottom — the order on a resume follows the strength of the evidence, not a rule about where education belongs.

Note that the entry is not just a course title and a date. The project underneath it is what makes the section worth reading.

The final-year project is written as a job

Six months, a real client, a measured problem, a recommendation, an outcome that the owners acted on. That is the shape of a work bullet, and the fact that it was coursework does not change what it evidences.

This is the single most underused item on graduate resumes. Almost everyone lists the degree and leaves the project as a title, if they mention it at all — which throws away the only piece of long, self-directed, outcome-bearing work most graduates have.

The society treasurer role is the strongest section

£4,200 is not a large budget. It is a real one, and it was yours. The three numbers here — the budget, the twelve approaches, the three signed — put it above most of what a first resume contains, because they are checkable and they describe decisions rather than attendance.

“Member of the Entrepreneurship Society” would have said none of this. Membership is not experience. A role with a responsibility attached is.

The retail job stays, and it is not filler

Every Saturday for almost three years, alongside full study, is evidence of reliability that no coursework can provide — and it is exactly what an employer worries about with a first hire. The training bullet does further work: it says other people’s competence was put in your hands.

Unrelated work is worth less than related work. It is worth considerably more than a blank space, and far more than a “skills” section padded with adjectives.

The line you must not cross

Everything above is a true thing described in resume language. None of it is a true thing inflated into something else.

There is a real temptation at this stage to promote a group project to “led a team”, or a three-week placement to an internship. It is a bad trade even setting honesty aside: the invented parts are the ones you cannot discuss for more than a minute, and the interview is where that shows.

An honest first resume with a real £4,200 budget on it beats an impressive one you cannot talk about.

What is not repeated here

How to phrase a bullet as an outcome, and what to cut, are in the customer service resume example. Why this page is single-column with plain headings is in how to check if your resume is ATS-friendly.
